Fire and Ice- CLASS-X- An analytical description in English
-Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
-Robert Frost
Desire- a strong feeling of wanting
to have something
Hold with- support
Perish- die
Suffice- be sufficient
ANALYTICAL EXPLANATION
The poem “Fire and Ice” by Robert
Frost explains themes of destructive behaviour within human nature driven by
passion or indifference. The speaker of the poem leaves the readers to
contemplate the potential consequences of these behaviours.
Here in this poem, the poet presents
contrasting views on how the world might end. The lines “some say the world
will end in fire” and “some say in ice” present dichotomy between fire and ice.
Here fire represents human passion and ice indicates hatred. Hence, the force
of fire with the emotion of desire and ice with hate are responsible to destroy
the world.
The poet is aware of uncontrolled
human emotions. The phrase “I have tasted of desire” indicates poet’s
experience. Hence, the self-destructive nature of human beings may cause an end
to the existing beautiful world. Emotions of desire, greed and lust are like
fire. Passion and emotion can easily trigger human beings. These strong forces
of nature may trap anybody in a materialistic world. These things may ruin
human life if not controlled. Unchecked human desire hence, may cause the world
to end.
On the other hand, the poet
thinks hateful side of human emotions. Like fire, ice may also cause an end to
this world. It causes inner destruction as human beings let their emotions rule
them. Rough and rigid side of human
emotions destroy themselves. Thus, both these powers have same amount of force
to cause an end to the world. Here, the speaker predicts that someday the world
will end either by fire or by ice.
So, some people think of fire and
some favour ice to cause an end to the world. The poem unfolds the destructive
side of unchecked emotions. It brings catastrophic effect on human life if not
checked.
