The Road Not Taken- CLASS-IX- An analytical description in English
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Diverged- separated from another rout
Yellow wood- a forest with yellow leaves
Undergrowth- a dense growth of shrubs and other plants
This poem describes a moment of decision and reflection we face in our life. The poet finds himself in a wooded area with two paths splitting off from each other. Here, yellow woods represent autumn, a season of transition.
Being a single traveller he cann’t travel both the road. He has to make a choice to take a road out of the two. It reflects our experience of making choices in our real life.
As the speaker is a single person he can not explore both the path simultaneously. He was in a dilemma to choose right path. In fact, right choice brings success in life.
The speaker looks down one of the paths as far as he can see. But, eventually the path curves and disappears into the dense growth of shrubs and plants. It indicates about uncertainty of ultimate destination.
Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
Fair- beautiful
Better claim- better choice
Wanted wear- had never been walked before
had worn them really about the same- they were really just about the same
Now, the speaker judges the other path. It was a less travelled path and the speaker paid more attention on it. He was willing to explore it with confidence.
This one was a grassy path. It needed someone to walk on. The road was less used by previous travellers. According to the speaker, this road was more promising. Here, the poet justifies his choice to travel on this one.
Now, the poet experiences a twist in his reasoning. He believed that the second path was promising one as it appeared less travelled. But it had also been worn down by passers-by. The speaker realized that, both the paths were equally travelled. Here, it signifies that both the choices are valid with similar outcomes. Thus, it highlights the complexity of decision making.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
Trodden black - the sign of worn down under foot
Way leads on to way- one road leads to another
Both the paths seemed untouched that morning with no previous footprints ruining the yellow dried leaves on the ground. They were inviting and equally untravelled also.
Here, the speaker looked thoughtfully. He considers keeping the first path for another day. However, the speaker realizes the unpredictable nature of life’s journey. Again, he realizes that one path or decision leads to another creating a series of interconnected choices.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Sigh- a long deep breath
Ages and ages- the distant future
Hence-from now
The choice the speaker made at the fork in the road will become a story. It will be a story of both regression and appreciation for the choice the speaker made at the fork.
Here, the speaker confirms that he chooses the less travelled path and this decision had a significant impact on his life. He preferred the road less travelled and it brought him success in life. The journey he experienced was unique and hence fruitful also.
