The Ant and The Cricket- CLASS-VIII- An analytical description in English

 The Ant and The Cricket.

-Aesop

This poem is a fable where animals talk like human beings. It bears an important message for those who refrain from doing hard works. This poem emphasizes the importance of responsibility. It also signifies the importance of foresight. It teaches us the lesson of hard work.

A silly young cricket, accustomed to sing

Through the warm, sunny months of gay summer and spring,

Began to complain when he found that, at home,

His cupboard was empty, and winter was come.

Silly-

Accustomed-

Gay-

Cupboard-

A silly young cricket spends its time singing joyfully and dancing merrily throughout the bright weathers of summer and spring. The environment was so mystical that It remained busy experiencing the beauty of nature. Never it worried about the uncertain future. However, when winter arrives, he finds nothing in its store house. Now, the cricket faces with challenge of surviving in bitter cold. Hence, the cricket began to express its pain.

Not a crumb to be found

On the snow-covered ground;

Not a flower could he see,

Not a leaf on a tree.

“Oh! what will become,” says the cricket, “of me?”

Crumb-

Snow covered ground-

As winter arrives, the cricket can neither see a crumb of food on the snow-covered ground nor discover flowers or leaves on trees. The snow covers all the ground and hence the cricket worries feeling uncertainty about his precious life. He experiences desperation and vulnerability with the onset of winter.

At last by starvation and famine made bold,

All dripping with wet, and all trembling with cold,

Away he set off to a miserly ant,

To see if, to keep him alive, he would grant

Starvation-

Famine-

Dripping-

Wet-

Trembling-

Miserly ant-

Finally, driven by starvation and bitter cold, the cricket musters courage and prepares himself to seek help form a miserly ant. Ants by nature are industries and they gather food during clear weather to meet the adverse situation in winter. They are resourceful also. Thus, the cricket visits to the ant hoping that, the ant might provide him food and shelter.

Him shelter from rain,

And a mouthful of grain.

He wished only to borrow;

He’d repay it tomorrow;

If not, he must die of starvation and sorrow.

Shelter-

Mouthful of grain-

The cricket requests the ant for help asking for a little shelter and mouthful of grain. The poor cricket promises the ant to repay it. He appeals to the miser ant emphasizing urgency of his adverse situation. The cricket was experiencing great sorrow and hunger. The cricket discovers himself in dire circumstances due to lack of foresight.

Says the ant to the

cricket, “I’m your servant

and friend,

But we ants never

borrow; we ants never

lend.

But tell me, dear cricket,

did you lay nothing by

When the weather was

warm?” Quoth the cricket,

“Not I!

Borrow-

Lend-

Quoth-

The ant replies the cricket considering him as friend emphasizing their principle of not borrowing and lending. They rely on their hard work. On the other hand, the cricket had been enjoying the warmer weather without thinking about the future. Now the ant asks the cricket whether it had saved anything for future and he admits he does not. This shows cricket’s lack of preparation for harder times.

My heart was so light

That I sang day and night,

For all nature looked gay.”

“You sang, Sir, you say?

Go then,” says the ant, “and dance the winter away.”

The cricket said that, during summer and winter, it remained busy in singing and dancing as its heart was filled with joy and hence, did not save anything for future. On the other hand, the ant maintaining its disciplined nature suggests the cricket to do the same thing in winter also. In fact, the ant tells the cricket to face the consequences of his actions.

Thus ending, he hastily lifted the wicket,

And out of the door turned the poor little cricket.

Folks call this a fable. I’ll warrant it true:

Some crickets have four legs, and some have two.

Hastily lifted the wicket-

Fable-

warrant-

The ant dismisses the cricket without any help or sympathy. Now the cricket realizes its mistake and faces the consequences of his actions. He is left to confront the bitter winter without food and shelter. This story is applicable to real life. In our society some people better prepare to face challenges in real life while others do not. They are cricket having two legs. This story bears a moral lesson about the importance of foresight.
