The unlikely best friend- Class VI-Detailed Description
FRIENDSHIP
THE
UNLIKELY BEST FRIEND
Gajaraja, the elephant, lived in the best booth of the royal stables.
The king was fond of Gajaraja, and he had ordered that the elephant should be
well looked after. In spite of royal comforts, Gajaraja was sad because he had
no friends. The mahout, or elephant trainer, was the only one he ever
interacted with. The mahout was a kind man who served Gajaraja food, and gave
him a bath in the elephant pond daily. He was a good caretaker, but not a
friend.
Difficult words: -
Fond of – having a liking for someone or something
Look after- to take care of
Interacted- communicate
Care taker- one that gives emotional or physical care
There was an elephant in the
name of Gajaraja that lived in the most beautiful place in king’s stable. The
king liked the animal much and made sure that it was taken care properly. Even
though the animal had everything it needed he was not happy as it had no
friend. In fact, Gajaraja was feeling himself lonely. The mahout was a kind
hearted person and taking good care of the animal, feeding it and giving a bath
regularly. But he was not a close
friend.
“I wish I had a friend I can play with,” thought Gajaraja. One late
evening, a dog strayed into the stable. Gajaraja could see that the visitor was
tired and hungry. He pushed some of the food he was munching towards the dog.
The visitor wagged his tail, looked up at the elephant to convey his thanks,
and then turned his full attention to the food in front of him. As soon as he
finished eating, he fell asleep.
Difficult words: -
Strayed into the stable- to wander into the stable
Munching- eat something audibly
Wagged- caused to move to and fro
Fell asleep- to start sleeping
Gajaraja wished he had a friend
to share time. But he was lonely and longing for friendship. Once a dog while
wandering entered into the stable. It was tired and hungry. Gajaraja noticed
the situation of the dog and pushed some of his food towards the hungry dog.
Wagging his tail, the dog thanked the elephant and concentrated his attention
on the food. The dog was so tired that after eating the food he fell asleep
there in the stable.
The next morning, the mahout found the stray dog in the stable. He did
not mind the dog. He also noticed that Gajaraja seemed to like the company. So,
he threw some crumbs to the dog, which the animal accepted wagging his tail.
Difficult words: -
Stable- home for pet animals like cows, goats, horses and elephants etc.
Noticed- observed
Seemed to- supposed to
Crumbs- piece of food
The next morning the mahout saw
the stray dog but did not mind on its presence. On the other hand, he noticed
that Gajaraja seemed to enjoy the new company. He himself also showed his love
to the dog by giving some crumbs to it. Wagging his tail, the dog accepted it.
When the elephant went out for a bath, the dog accompanied his friend.
Plunging into the water, the elephant gave himself a shower using his long
trunk, as the dog watched. The elephant took a trunkful of water and playfully
splashed the water on his friend. The dog yelped for he hated taking showers. The
mahout laughed.

Shower- a light fall of water drops
Playfully- in a light hearted manner

the elephant sprayed water over its body using his trunk. The dog, on the other
hand remained busy watching Gajaraja from the side. All of sudden Gajaraja took
a trunkful of water and sprayed it on the dog playfully. The dog surprised
producing a short and sharp cry for it didn’t like getting wet. Observing this
playful scene of both the elephant and dog the mahout began to laugh.
On their way home, the elephant picked up the dog with his trunk and placed him on his back. The dog was delighted to get a ride. A farmer passing by saw the dog. “Buntee,” he yelled. The dog ran to him. The farmer hugged the dog and told the mahout that he was looking for his dog ever since he disappeared from his house. He was glad he found him now. The mahout had no objection to the farmer taking the dog home. The farmer tossed a rope round the neck of the dog, saying, “Come Buntee, let’s go home.”

Placed on- keep gently
Delighted- showing great pleasure
Passing by- to go past

the dog and placed him on its back gently. The dog was also happy to have a
ride. On their way, a farmer passing by identified the dog and shouted
‘Buntee’. Finding his own master, the dog ran to the farmer surprisingly. The
farmer held the animal tightly in his arms. He explained everything about the
disappearance of the dog. He said that he was searching for it. Then the farmer
putting a rope around the neck of the animal took it home. The mahout did not
mind on it.
Only when the farmer pulled the rope did the dog realise that he was
being taken away from his friend. He yelped, the elephant winced, but neither
the farmer nor the mahout noticed that the two friends were in tears.
Difficult words: -
Pull- exert force on something so to cause movement towards
Realise- become fully aware of
Tears- fluids that flow from eyes
The farmer pulled the dog saying
‘come, Bunty, let’s go home’ and the dog realized that it was being taken away
from Gajaraja. The dog cried and the elephant also made a grimace in pain. They
were in tears. They were going to be separated.
The next day at lunch time the mahout served Gajaraja his favourite
food. When the mahout came back after finishing his other chores, he was
surprised to see that the food had remained untouched.
Difficult words: -
Served- performed duties or services
Chores- HomeWorks

The next day the mahout noticed
that Gajaraja did not take his lunch. Thinking it might be a case of slight
indigestion he did not take it into his consideration seriously. The animal did
not have his lunch that night also. Even he refused to take it the next day. It
made worry the mahout. He took a close observation of Gajaraja’s tummy and
found nothing wrong. He suspected the elephant longing for the dog.
Difficult words: -
Concerned- related to
Indigestion- discomfort in stomach due to difficulty in digesting
Force- coercion or compulsion
Worried- anxious or troubled
Tommy- stomach
Missing- longing
Wondered- felt doubt
In the meantime, though the dog
found his original master it was not happy. He did not touch his food since
being taken home. The farmer noticed the situation of the dog carefully and
judged that it was longing for the elephant. He reminded Buntee’s glowing face
on the back of the elephant. Finally, he permitted the dog to go to his friend
Gajaraja.
Meanwhile at the farmer’s house, the dog had also not touched his food
ever since he was brought home. “Are you missing your friend?” asked the farmer
remembering the happy look on Buntee’s face while sitting on the elephant’s
back. “I cannot see you go hungry,” said the farmer, “If you miss your friend
so much, go to him.”
Difficult words: -
Meanwhile- in the intervening period of time
Miss- to feel sad that a person is not present
So much- indicating an unspecified quantity of emotion
Removing the rope from around
the neck of the dog the farmer made the animal free to taste its own freedom
and happiness. Though the animal was weak it sprang to the farmer’s feet and
licked his hand once to show gratitude and started running till he arrived at
the stable to meet Gajaraja.
The farmer removed the rope with which he had tied the dog. The dog,
though weak, sprang to his feet. He licked the farmer’s hand once and then ran.
He stopped only when he arrived at the stable.
The elephant picked up the dog with his trunk and gave him a joyous
swing. The mahout was relieved. He quickly brought the food. “Both of you eat
first,” he said. By then the farmer who had followed the dog, joined him. The
two of them watched with satisfaction the two friends eating food. “It’s not
only Gajaraja who has found a friend,” said the mahout hugging the farmer,
“I’ve also found one.”
Difficult words: -
Removed the rope- made free from the rope
Sprang to his feet- darted to his feet
Licked- showed gratitude
Joyous swing- a swing that is full of joy
Relieved- relaxed, free from worried
Brought the food- served the food
Satisfaction- pleasure
Hugged- embraced
Finally, when the dog arrived at
the stable, the elephant picked the dog up with his longer trunk and gave him a
joyful swing. The mahout relieved seeing them reunited and served them food. The
farmer also reached the place following the dog. Both of them observed the
friendship between the two animals. The mahout moved by the scene hugged the
farmer saying he had found one too.
